I received this book from Netgalley in exchange of an honest review.
I saw this book on Netgalley and it sounded (and going by the cover), looked, absolutely fun. Like a book I would enjoy. Sadly, it wasn’t. For various reasons.
Let me start with the story. Or actually, what story? A boy visits his bear friend (why does he have one, and how did they meet) for the day (Which is totally a bit of crazy, considering he has to travel for almost 2 hours, and then just leaves late at night, why not stay and sleep over if it takes you this long to get to him?) and they drink tea, do some stuff, and done. The day is over. Sorry if that spoiled things, but for once I don’t feel guilty about it. It was the most boring 20~ish pages ever. And I have some experience with slow moving stories, I have seen enough slice of life anime (like Aria) which move at snail’s page, but even they have more story than this book.
Next is the art. I am sorry, but yes, I do have to be honest, so here goes. It was horrendous. I was looking forward to cuteness and fun, but instead got badly drawn bears and humans. Almost zero backgrounds (Woot, just a couch and a tv in the picture, so exciting!). Sorry, but in picture books (the word says it already) the art needs to be at least decent, it is the main focus of picture books. :( Maybe it is simply a matter of opinions, I have seen enough stuff that I didn’t like but others absolutely loved and adored.
So yeah, would I recommend this one? No. Not at all. There are other bear-related picture books that are better. It is a shame though, I was really looking forward to this one.
